When the desk locks

Why the desk locks itself, and how to carry on where you left off.

Who this is for: desk volunteers.

The desk tablet sits on a table in a public hall, with members' details on it. So it locks itself after two minutes without anyone touching it, and goes back to Who's on the desk?. You can also lock it yourself at any time with Lock in the header.

Steps: carry on after a lock

  1. Tap your name on Who's on the desk?.
  2. Type your PIN and press Enter.
What you'll see

"Picked up where you left off." The member you were serving is loaded again, with the toys you had scanned still on the visit.

Parked visits

If the desk locks in the middle of a visit, the visit is parked, not lost. Other volunteers who unlock the desk see "Parked: 1 visit (Sam)" but cannot open it: only the volunteer who started it gets it back, with their own PIN.

Handing over to someone else

Press Switch in the header. The desk goes back to Who's on the desk? so the next volunteer can tap their name. Anything they lend is recorded under their name.

Why two minutes?

It keeps families' details safe if the desk is left while you help someone at the shelves, and it means each loan is recorded against the right volunteer. If you find you are typing your PIN a lot, tell your coordinator: the answer is usually a second tablet for the floor, not a longer lock.
